The soul is like a lotus flower

The lotus flower is one of the oldest and most profound symbols of our planet.

It grows in muddy waters and grows high above the surface to bloom in extraordinary beauty.

At night, the flower closes and sinks under water, at dusk, it comes back to the surface and opens. The lotus flower is a sign of enlightenment.

Lotus – the symbol of renewal, transformation and a new beginning.

The lotus flower is one of the oldest and most profound symbols of our planet.

The Indian lotus flower stands for divinity, fertility, wealth. Knowledge and enlightenment.

It is associated with the goddess of wealth, Maha Lakshmi, who brings wealth, purity and generosity.

She sits in a full-blooded lotus flower that stands for purity, beauty and all the best.

The lotus flower symbolizes the purity of the heart and mind, spiritual enlightenment and a virtually unbounded spirit.

If you are doing yoga, you have probably seen the lotus flower as a symbol once or twice. It looks beautiful, but also has many meanings in yoga and in spiritual terms. Here you will learn why the Indian lotus is such a cherished plant that makes white lotus so special and what can be expressed with a lotus flower all.

Symbol of purity

The lotus flower is often referred to as the „Holy Flower“: in Buddhism, it is the symbol of the purity of the heart, faithfulness, creativity and enlightenment. Maybe you already heard the term „flower of life“. The Buddhist faith sees the lotus flower as Buddha’s birthplace. Love, life and rebirth are also among the long list of meanings attributed to this majestic flower.

If you look at a real lotus flower like that, it quickly becomes clear why it stands for purity and life after death. The flower grows in muddy waters, but never gets dirty thanks to the knobbed structure of the flower surfaces. At sunset, it closes its flowers and sinks under the water surface, to return flawlessly at the next daylight.

That means the lotus flower in yoga

Also in yoga, the lotus flower has a special meaning, because it stands for enlightenment and the third eye. This refers to one of the chakras, ie the energy centers of the body, namely the area between the eyebrows. The third eye is not visible as such, but opens wisdom and knowledge according to the teachings of yoga. As an experienced yogi, you may now come across some asanas that involve the third eye.

And as a yogi, you also know that yoga is not just about exercise, it’s about meditation. And this is exactly where the lotus flower comes in again, because while you are meditating, you exercise control over your mind and are thus in search of enlightenment – just the important meaning of the lotus flower.

Colors of the lotus flower and their meaning

Now you may be wondering where the difference is in the different colors of the lotus flower. Basically, one differentiates between two types, namely the Indian and the American lotus.

Probably the largest symbolic meaning has the original holy flower, the white Indian lotus flower. It stands for spiritual purity that can be found in pure divinity. In other words, the white lotus flower, also called Pundrika, symbolizes spiritual perfection and is associated in Buddhism with the enlightened Buddha.

There is also the blue lotus (Utpala). Lotus flowers in this color embody constancy, perseverance and wisdom in the sense that you can control your own senses. Again, there is a connection to yoga, after all, just this control of their own perception is a central aspect of meditation.

The red lotus, Kamala, also has a special meaning. He represents innocence, love and passion, compassion and a pure heart. There are also lotus flowers in yellow, purple and pink.

By the way: If you read „lotus“ somewhere, it means the same flower. „Lotos“ comes from the Greek and became only over Latin to the spelling with „u“, which is mostly used today.

A flower, many meanings

Of course, what exactly symbolizes the lotus flower always depends on the cultural and religious context. In China, the Lotus is considered a symbol of a good marriage, since the sounds of „Lotus“ and „love“ are very similar. In India, in turn, the lotus flower is an important religious sign, while in yoga the focus is on the path of enlightenment or wisdom in the form of the third eye.
